Rules, rule overides, and rule hierarchies

RuleAgents, Inc. routinely works with organizations that have huge numbers of rules. We sometimes see tens of thousands of rules in an organization. To help a business understand its own business logic, RuleAgents analysts often perform business and rule analysis. From this analysis we organize rule hierarchies, defaults behaviors, and strategies for resolving conflicts among rules.

A good example of our work on resolving rule conflicts was RuleAgents devising novel rule override mechanisms for Primary Mortgage Insurance. Many rule engines incorporate constructs for replacing the execution of one rule with another. We helped extend these built-in capabilities to allow more specific organizational units to override rules of more general parts of the company.
